Mobile technologies are the most revolutionary innovations impacting on businesses today, according to research by Forrester.

A survey of enterprise architects found, of all the disruptive technologies changing business, the top two most impactful innovations were mobile applications and mobile platforms, such as HTML5 and iOS.

The ‘Top Emerging Technologies to Watch’ the study claimed, after mobile, cloud services and Big Data platforms were making the next biggest impression.

Brian Hopkins, principal enterprise architecture analyst at Forrester, said: “The results shouldn’t surprise anybody; however, if you are only looking at these, you are likely to get smacked in the face when you blink— things are changing that fast. In the near future, new platforms built on today’s hot technologies will create more disruption. For example, by 2016 there will be 760 million tablets in use and almost one-third will be sold to business.”

 

Mobile technology devices, such as tablets and smartphones, have become widely used within businesses in the last year as companies have embraced IT consumerization and bring your own device (BYOD) initiatives, According to IDC, the tablet market grew 75.3% year over year in the fourth quarter of 2012, while the smartphone market grew 41.7%.

In its latest mobile report, the analyst also claimed the two most popular operating systems, Android and iOS, were now dominating the market and are being used in 91.1% of all smartphones shipped worldwide
